Overview
Hindustani (northern Indian classical) vocalist Dr Achintya Prahlad will discuss the history of k̲h̲ayāl, as well as the technical basics - svara (musical notes), laya (tempo), rāga (melody), tāla (rhythm) and upaj (extempore improvisation). He will perform compositions in two different rāgas and on different themes. He will be accompanied by tabla player Jnanesh Kamath.
Following the talk and performance, all audience members are invited to join a brief practical workshop from 14.30-15.00. No prior knowledge of the musical form is required.
Performers
Dr Achintya Prahlad is a Hindustani vocalist and composer with knowledge of Carnatic (south Indian classical) music as well. He did a PhD in Biophysics at the University of Göttingen, Germany, after which he taught biology, music and languages to undergraduates at Ashoka University, India, while simultaneously doing research on music and publishing papers. Achintya then moved on to do an MA in Music at SOAS, University of London, and is currently a PhD student at the Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge and a member of Wolfson's Music Society Committee.
Jnanesh Kamath is studying tabla under the tutelage of Shri Naveen Pai from Kochi, Kerala and Pt. Yogesh Samsi. He has performed with various classical vocalists and instrumentalists including Maestro Rakesh Chaurasia, Prof. Ojesh Prathap Singh, Himanshu Nanda, and Kiranpal Singh across India and UK. He is also learning Hindustani classical vocals from Pt. Kumar Mardur.

This event is open to everyone, free to attend and there is no need to book.

This event will take place in the Dining Hall on the first floor of our main building. There is step-free access with a lift and an accessible toilet.
