Overview

Hindustani (northern Indian classical) vocalist Dr Achintya Prahlad will discuss the history of k̲h̲ayāl, as well as the technical basics - svara (musical notes), laya (tempo), rāga (melody), tāla (rhythm) and upaj (extempore improvisation). He will perform compositions in two different rāgas and on different themes. He will be accompanied by tabla player Jnanesh Kamath.

Following the talk and performance, all audience members are invited to join a brief practical workshop from 14.30-15.00. No prior knowledge of the musical form is required.
