Powerlifting her way to the University World Championships in South Africa

Stacy Gould Congratulations to Stacey Gould, a second year PhD student in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, who has earned a place in the Cambridge University Powerlifting Club (CUPLC) squad for the University Powerlifting World Championships in South Africa in July. Stacey has been competing with the first full CUPLC women’s team and was awarded a second place trophy (her first trophy) in the 84+ category at the British University Powerlifting Championships earlier this year.

Stacey writes: "Compelled by an odd curiosity I entered my first Powerlifting competition a few months ago. After just one month of training – which mainly comprised trying to avoid decapitation or falling over with a loaded barbell (!) – you can imagine my expectations weren’t very high. However, I was fortunate enough to compete with six other (very strong!) women in CUPLC’s first full women’s team. We finished in the top 5 of all UK Universities, which qualifies us for the World University Championships to be held this year in July in South Africa! We’re obviously all extremely excited, but need to raise money (it'll cost around £1500 each) in order to compete. As you can see above Stacey is also a keen rower and was instrumental for the Women's second boat last year, winning blades with them.
