Overview

Cambridge University has been in existence over 800 years.

From a university based formerly upon religious institutions it has grown into the multi-disciplined and mostly secular university of the present. The collegiate system has expanded and the rather unique (apart from the “other place”) relationship between the University and the respective colleges has developed.

There has been a somewhat fractious relationship between the city of Cambridge and the University over a period of 700 years primarily, due to the privileges enjoyed by the University.

During the past 130 or so years the university has seen the expansion from 18 to 31 colleges and the admittance of women, both as students and academic staff and (rather belatedly) to the awarding of degrees to women. During this time there has also been a change from the original emphasis on undergraduate education to a great expansion of research disciplines and graduate courses.

The development of many commercial and research units within the city limits has also put extreme pressure on the domestic accommodation available in the city, which threatens to damage the close relationship between the fellows and members of a college.
